Obverse description : Buste lauré de Gordien III à droite, avec cuirasse et paludamentum, vu de trois quarts en arrière (A*2).
Obverse translation : "Imperator Gordianus Pius Felix Augustus" (Empereur Gordien Pieux Heureux Auguste).

Reverse legend : SECVRIT PERPET/ S-|C.
Reverse description : Securitas (La Sécurité) drapée debout à gauche, les jambes croisées, le coude gauche appuyé sur une colonne, tenant un sceptre de la main droite.
Reverse translation : "Securitas Augusti" (La Sécurité de l'Auguste).

Commentary


Ce type semble beaucoup plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est la deuxième fois que nous le proposons à la vente.

Gordian III is the grandson of Gordian I and the nephew of Gordian II, ephemeral emperors of the year 238. At the request of the people of Rome, he is chosen as Caesar by Balbin and Pupian and succeeds them after their assassinations. Emperor at 13, married at 16, killed at 19, this is how the life of this young man could be summed up, victim of the appetites of Philippe the Arab, new prefect of the praetorium.
