Commentary

ECU stands for European coin Unit. This international coin was created in 1979 as part of the European Monetary System (EMS) with the aim of providing EEC member countries with a zone of monetary stability by limiting exchange rate fluctuations between member countries. It was not a real coin but a basket of values. The real coin would be the euro.

Historical background

GIBRALTAR

From the Arabic "Djebel Tarik" ("the mountain of Tariq" named after Tariq ibn Ziyad), Gibraltar is an overseas territory of the United Kingdom located in the south of Spain. It connects the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. The English have maintained a significant military presence there in the past. Although it is now reduced, there are still many testimonies. Gibraltar is claimed by Spain although the majority of the population is against it. The question of Gibraltar is a major cause of dissension in Anglo-Spanish relations. Gibraltar is part of the European Union even if certain European regulations do not apply there, in particular in customs matters.
