Commentary

Very light weight. Type 2 ribbons. The date (year 19 on the reverse) is the regnal year of Septimius Severus. This type seems much rarer than general works suggest, with only three examples in Ganschow's work on the Henseler collection. This is the first time we have offered a copy for sale.

Historical background

GETA

(06/198-26/02/212)

Augustus

Geta, born on May 26, 189, became Caesar in 198 and the following year received the title of pontifex. He accompanies his father and his brother to Brittany from 208 and is raised to Augustat the following year. When Septimius Severus died in York on February 4, 211, the two brothers brought their father's ashes back to Rome and became co-emperors. But they hate each other. Finally, after a year of joint rule, Caracalla kills his brother in their mother's arms. Geta is dedicated to "damnatio memoriæ" (damnation of memory). His supporters are systematically massacred.
