Historical background

GERMANY - SAXONY-COBURG-EISENACH - JOHN CASIMIR and JOHN ERNEST II

(1572-1633)

The Duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach was created following the Partition of Erfurt in 1572 which decided the detachment of the Duchies of Coburg and Eisenach from the Duchy of Saxe-Weimar. The duchies were respectively attributed to Jean-Casimir and Jean-Ernest, the two sons of Jean-Frédéric II of Saxony. However, as the two princes were still minors at that time, the region was first governed by Prince Elector Augustus of Saxony. In 1586 the regency ended and Jean-Casimir and Jean-Ernest began to reign jointly over the duchy. Jean-Ernest withdrew little from power. In 1590 he renounced any participation in the government of the duchy for five years. At the end of this period the two brothers agree to share the region. Jean-Casimir keeps Saxe-Cobourg and Jean-Ernest receives Saxe-Eisenach..
