Historical background

GERMANY - ELECTORATE OF SAXONY - REGENCY OF FRANCIS XAVIER

(1763-1768)

François-Xavier (1730-1806) was the son of Frederick-Auguste II of Saxony, King of Poland and Archduchess Marie-Josèphe of Austria. Lieutenant general of the French armies since 1758, he commanded a Saxon army corps during the Seven Years' War and won the Battle of Lutzelberg in 1762. On the death of his older brother, he became regent of Saxony from 1763 to 1768. He renounced the throne of Poland in 1765 in favor of Stanislas II Augustus, supported by Catherine II of Russia.
