Commentary

Historical background

GERMANY - CITY OF LANDAU - CHARLES-ALEXANDER OF WURTTEMBERG

(1713)

Landau had been occupied by the French at the start of the Dutch War in 1672. The town is located north of Wissembourg, currently in Germany. Louis de Bade came to lay siege to the city on July 10, 1702 with Joseph of Austria, the future Joseph I (1705-1711) and the city fell on September 10, 1702 without being rescued. It will be taken over by Vauban in 1703, but lost again in 1704. In 1713, the city is held by the Duke of Wurttemberg, Charles-Alexandre, who will have to melt his dishes during the siege which begins on June 22, 1713. The city falls to the French hands of Marshal de Bezons on August 20, 1713.
