Historical background

GERMANY - ARCHBISHOPRIC OF COLOGNE - FREDERIC VON SAARWERDEN

(1371-1414)

Frederick of Saarwerden (born around 1348 in Sarrewerden; † April 9, 1414 in Bonn) was from 1370 to 1414 Archbishop of Cologne under the name of Frederick III. By the favor of his great-uncle, the archbishop of Trier Cunon II of Falkenstein, he was elected archbishop at only 20 years old, a situation that the pope did not endorse until after two years of reflection in Avignon. Frédéric de Sarrewerden was a supporter of Emperor Charles IV and in return received from this monarch many privileges which enabled him to carry out his hegemonic policy in the Rhine valley..
