Historical background
GERMANICUS AND AUGUSTUS
Germanicus is the eldest son of Nero Drusus and Antonia. He was born in 15 BC and was adopted in 4 at the same time as Tiberius. He led numerous campaigns on the Rhine-Danubian limes and received the Triumph in 17. He was then sent to Syria with a proconsular imperium and died in 19 in Antioch, perhaps assassinated at the instigation of Tiberius by Pison (Suetonius) . He is the father of Caligula and young Agrippina as well as the brother of Claude. Germanicus was often associated with Augustus through Caligula his son and great-grandson.
