Historical background

GARGULIUS, OGULNIUS and VERGILIUS

(86 BC)

L Cornelius Cinna and C. Marius were consuls in 86 BC. Marius was consul for the seventh time when he died in January and was succeeded by L. Valerius Flaccus. Cinna will also be consul without interruption from 87 to 84 before being assassinated. Sulla takes Athens. After the battles of Chéronée and Orchomène, Mithridates signs the peace of Dardanus with Sylla. Nicomedes IV of Bithynia and Ariobarzane of Cappadocia are restored. Catullus and Sallust were both born in 86 BC.
