Obverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Obverse description : Tête à droite, triple diadème orné de chevrons, l'œil surmonté d'un sourcil et d'une esse. Triple rinceau globulé et pointé derrière la tête.

Reverse


Reverse legend : ANÉPIGRAPHE.
Reverse description : Cheval à gauche, la tête retournée. Au-dessus, deux esses entourant un rameau et la tête du cheval. Rosace perlée et pointée sous le cheval et croix pointée devant le poitrail.

Commentary


Ce quart de statère est frappé sur flan large et bien centré. Il appartient à une série très importante ; S. Scheers avait répertorié une trentaine d’exemplaires !.

The Leuques are mentioned only once in the Gallic Wars. Their neighbors were the Médiomatriques, the Lingons and the Séquanes. The Leuques as well as the Séquanes and the Lingones provided Caesar with wheat when the Roman army stopped at Vesontio (Besançon) to refuel before facing the Germans of Ariovistus (58 BC). Caesar (BG. I, 40).
