Historical background

GALLA PLACIDIA

(+450)

Galla Palcidia is the daughter of Theodosius I and Galla and the granddaughter of Valentinian I. Half-sister of Arcadius and Honorius, she was born around 388-389 and married Constantius III, whose future Valentinian III and Honoria she had. Captured during the sack of Rome by Alaric in 410, she married Athaulf in 414 before being released. She received the title of augusta when Constantius III became co-emperor, but the latter died in 421. On the death of Honorius in 423, she found refuge at the court of Constantinople with Theodosius II, her nephew. Returning to the West, she was regent for her son Valentinian III and favored his marriage with Licinia Eudoxia, daughter of Theodosius II, in 436. She ended her life in devotion and died on November 27, 450. She was buried in Ravenna.
