Historical background

GABON - REPUBLIC - LEON MBA

(1960-1967)

Independent since August 17, 1960, the Gabonese Republic has maintained close ties with France. The political system is presidential-type with single party. Léon Mba was the first president of independence until his death in 1967. Overthrown by a military coup in February 1964, he managed to return to power with the help of French troops. In 1967, former Vice President Omar Bongo succeeded him.
