Historical background

GABON - REPUBLIC - LÉON M'BA

(1960-1967)

Independent since August 17, 1960, the Gabonese Republic has maintained close ties with France. The political system is of the presidential type with a single party. Léon Mba is the first president of independence when he died in 1967. Overthrown by a military coup in February 1964, he managed to return to power with the help of French troops. In 1967, former vice-president Omar Bongo succeeded him.
