Commentary

Lightweight. Mr. Crawford noted an estimate of ten obverse dies and eleven reverse dies. The authors of Roman Provincial Coinage recorded forty-two examples. However, this type appears to be rarer than general works suggest. This is the first time we have offered this type for sale.

Historical background

FULVIA

(+40 BC)

Marc Antony's wife

Fulvia is the daughter of Marcus Fulvius and Sempronia. She married Marc Antoine in 46 BC and gave him two sons. She is also Octave's mother-in-law when he marries his daughter Claudia, Octave's first wife. She hates Octave and tries to go up against her son-in-law the consul Lucius Antoine, brother of Antoine, at the origin of the war of Perugia. Besieged, the consul is forced to surrender to Octave, who forgives him and then sends him to govern Spain, where he dies shortly afterwards. Antoine, reconciled with Octave, meets Fulvia in Athens where he reproaches her many times. Fulvia, broken, dies shortly after. The eldest son of Fulvia and Antony, Marcus Antonius Iunior (nicknamed Antyllus by the Greeks) is betrothed to Julie, daughter of Octavian, in 37 BC, during the renewal of the pact between Antony and Octavian at Taranto . Octavian has the son of Antony and Fulvia executed when he seizes Egypt in 30 BC.
