Historical background

FRENCH GUINEA

(1891-1958)

French Guinea was a colony and then a French overseas territory in West Africa which became independent in 1958 as the Republic of Guinea. The decree of December 17, 1891 transformed the colony of "southern rivers" into "French Guinea". The decree of March 10, 1893 dismembers it into three colonies: French Guinea, Ivory Coast and Benin. It will be necessary to wait until 1899 so that its borders are fixed. It was part of French West Africa (AOF) from 1904. French Guinea became an overseas territory (TOM) from the French Constitution of October 27, 1946.
