Historical background

FRANCIS II. CURRENCY ON BEHALF OF HENRI II

(10/07/1559-4/12/1560)

Eldest son of Henry II and Catherine de Medici, Francis II was born in Fontainebleau in 1544. In 1558, he married Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland and niece of the Duke of Guise and the Cardinal of Lorraine. Ascended the throne in 1559 after the fatal accident to his father, a young King abandoned the effective exercise of the power to disgraced Guise and the Constable de Montmorency, favorite of the preceding reign. The Government of Guise alienated part of the nobility and the Bourbon family. He continued persecution against Protestants and repressed in blood the conspiracy of Amboise (1560), rising to seize the person of the young king. The assembly of notables met in the same year Fontainebleau disavowed the Guise and the Queen Mother Catherine began to establish the influence it would retain under the following reigns. Thus began the civil wars, which under the name of religious wars would last until 1593. Abroad in the course of business and the crisis began, frail, Francis II died in 1560, aged just sixteen.
