Commentary
This type of shield, with the two crowned Fs alongside the shield of France, is specific to the La Rochelle workshop and is particularly rare. Such shields were struck under the master Jean de La Fontaine (different fountain) and others, like this one, under the master André Cybot (different A at the end of the legends (1539-1541). This shield was therefore struck in 1539 or 1540. example struck with the same obverse and reverse dies as the example from the Bourgey sale of 20/21 December 1929 (André J... collection). With 49 examples in a box, production can be estimated at only 9,800 examples, but this figure may also include gold shields of another type
