Commentary
Particularly rare coin for the Bordeaux mint. Due to the presence of the two crowned Fs on the reverse, it is certainly a gold ecu cut to 70 pieces to the mark. The register of deliveries for the year 1519 in Bordeaux indicates that 590 ecus were put into circulation following a single delivery on September 2, 1519. The following 4,697 gold ecus cut to 71 1/6 to the mark were delivered between October 4, 1519 and September 25, 1520. In addition, at the closing, it is indicated that the box contained “III deniers d’or fin de vieulx coing” referring to the gold ecus with two crowned Fs (AN, Z1b 836)
