Commentary
This coinage, absent from all consulted works, is unpublished and unique for the lordship of Florennes and bears the name of Thibault (II) of Lorraine (1281-1312). The Bishop of Liège, Hugues III of Chalon, imposed on Thibault the annual payment of 25 silver marks for the transfer of his right to mint coins. Having not been paid, the prelate demanded payment of this sum in 1307 (Flon, II, p. 441). Coinage from the lordship of Florennes in Thibault's name is particularly rare and known only through a few coins copying French coins (gros tournois) or foreign coins (English sterling or double tiers of gros with an eagle). This half-gros or baudequin with a rider on the right and a plume on the horse's head is inspired by the baudequins minted in Valenciennes by Jean II d'Avesnes (1280-1304)
