Historical background

FLANDERS - GHENT - BAUDOUIN VIII AND/OR BAUDOUIN IX

(1191-1195-1205)

In 1191, Baudouin V of Hainaut became Count of Flanders under the name of Baudouin VIII. In 1195, his son Baldwin IX succeeded him in these two provinces. Baldwin IX participated in the 4th Crusade and was elected, in 1204, Emperor of Constantinople. He died in 1205 fighting the Bulgarians. After his death, his daughter Jeanne de Flandre was placed under the guardianship of the King of France Philippe-Auguste.
