Historical background

FLANDERS - COUNTY OF FLANDERS - PHILIP THE GOOD

Philippe le Bon (1396-1469), after having been the ally of the English, signed the Treaty of Arras in 1435. He returned to French orbit but had succeeded in reconstituting, thanks to a skilful policy of marriages and regroupings , a true empire, heir to Lotharingia. The lighters on the obverse and reverse recall the founding of the Order of the Golden Fleece in 1429.
