Historical background

FLANDERS - COUNTY OF FLANDERS - LOUIS I OF CRÉCY - MARY OF BURGUNDY

(1477-1482)

Marie was born in Brussels in 1457 from the union of Charles the Bold and Isabelle de Bourbon. When her father died in 1477, King Louis XI of France, her godfather and guardian, attempted to marry her to the Dauphin Charles in order to occupy his estates. Marie yielded some seigniories and Arras to the king of France, but she married Maximilian of Austria on August 18, 1477; this marriage was at the origin of the War of Succession of Burgundy. She is the mother of Philippe le Beau (born June 12, 1478) and Marguerite of Austria. She died at the age of 25 from a fall from a horse and was buried in 1482 in the Church of Our Lady in Bruges where her magnificent tomb is still preserved..
