Historical background

FLANDERS - COUNTY OF FLANDERS - LOUIS I OF CRÉCY

(1322-1346)

Louis I (1304-1346) succeeded his grandfather, Robert de Béthune, in 1322. He married Marguerite de France (1310-1382), the daughter of Philippe V le Long. He won with his cousin, Philippe VI de Valois, the victory of Cassel in 1328 over the bourgeois militias. He is torn between his duty as a vassal to the King of France and the economic choices that push him towards England. At the start of the Hundred Years' War, he was driven out by Van Artevelde who rallied to Edward III of England. He was killed at the battle of Crécy on August 26, 1346..
