Historical background

FLANDERS - COUNTY OF FLANDERS - LOUIS OF MALE

(1346-1384)

Louis de Male (1330-1384) is the son of Louis, Count of Flanders, who was killed at the Battle of Crecy (1346). He will try to maintain a policy of strict neutrality between the King of France and that of England. In 1382, he became Count of Burgundy. Without a male heir, he married his daughter Margaret to Philip the Bold, son of John the Good, captured with his father at the battle of Poitiers in 1356 "Father keep you right, father keep you left." On the death of Louis de Male, Philip the Bold, who succeeded him, was at the origin of the great Burgundian domain. Louis de Male was also Count of Rethel.
