Historical background

FLANDERS - COUNTY OF FLANDERS - CHARLES THE BOLD

(06/15/1467-01/5/1477)

Charles (1433-1477) was the son of Philip the Good and Isabella of Portugal. He first married Catherine of France (1428-1446) in 1440, then Isabelle de Bourbon in 1454, finally Marguerite of York, sister of Edward IV, in 1468. He succeeded his father on June 15, 1467. Charles sequesters Louis XI at the Péronne interview and accuses him of treason. The king submits. Charles helps his brother-in-law Édouard to reconquer his kingdom in 1471. He besieges Beauvais in July 1472 (heroic resistance from Jeanne Huchette), but has to lift the siege. He then tries to recreate a kingdom of Lotharingia with the help of Emperor Frederick III. It's a fail. Charles unsuccessfully besieged Cologne in 1475. He then threw himself on the Lorraine of René II and took Nancy on September 30. Charles was defeated by the Swiss on June 21, 1476 at Murten. Charles was killed besieging Nancy on January 5, 1477. His daughter Marie, born in 1457, succeeded him.
