On August 12, 1708, Prince Eugene and the Duke of Marlborough made their junction before Lille. The city defended by the Duke of Boufflers did not surrender until October 22, the citadel capitulating on December 9. During the siege, the Marshal melted the cannons out of use in order to produce coins of XX, X and V sols..
