Suite à l’invasion des îles par les forces armées argentines en 1982 et la guerre de reconquête, le Royaume-Uni décida de construire un nouvelle aéroport pour la RAF. La base de Mount Pleasant est inaugurée le 12 mai 1985 par le Prince Andrew.
