Commentary

The dates on the token help to resolve the uncertainties of authors concerning the exact date of Bourru's deanship. The reverse recalls the creation of chairs of anatomy and surgery in French at the initiative of Antoine Petit, professor of anatomy and surgery and member of the Academy of Sciences. The professors appointed to this chair by the Faculty had to be members of the Faculty and teach for 10 years, then give way to younger masters.

Historical background

FACULTÉ DE MÉDECINE DE PARIS

The Faculty of Medicine of Paris is one of the four components of the University of Paris, with the Faculty of Theology, the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Arts and Letters. In 1789, it consisted of one hundred and fifty-two doctors, seven of whom were appointed to teach materia medica, physiology, pathology, pharmacy, childbirth, French surgery and Latin surgery. It was headed by a dean, who was also responsible for forming the University tribunal with the deans of Theology and Law, and the four prosecutors of the Faculty of Arts..
