Commentary

Historical background

FABIA

(82-80 BC)

The years 82-80 BC are crucial years for the history of the Republic. Sylla triumphs over the Marianist party and its Samnite allies. He crushes them at the battle of Porte Colline in 82 BC. This victory is followed by the proscriptions which decimates senators and knights. Sertorius takes refuge in Spain. Pompey crushes Sulla's enemies in Sicily. Murena is driven out of Cappadocia. Sylla proclaims the end of hostilities. The following year, Sylla received the title of Dictator. Pompey defeats the supporters of Marius in Africa. Sertorius is driven out of Spain but returns there as early as 80 BC. Finally Sylla gives up his powers in 79 BC and dies the following year.
