Par le traité de Westphalie, la paix est conclue avec l'Empire en 1648. La France se voit reconnaître la possession des Trois Evêchés (Metz, Toul et Verdun), acquiert la majeure partie de l'Alsace (sauf Strasbourg, ville libre, et Mulhouse), et conserve Pignerol.
By the Treaty of Westphalia, peace was concluded with the Empire in 1648. France was granted possession of the Three Bishoprics (Metz, Toul and Verdun), acquired most of Alsace (except Strasbourg, a free city, and Mulhouse), and retained Pignerol.
