Commentary


James Francis « Jim » Thorpe (1888-1953) est un indien métis né d’un père irlandais et d’une mère nord-amérindienne Sauk et Fox. Son nom indien est Wa-Tho-Huck, « Sentier Brillant ». Il est considéré comme un des sportifs les plus polyvalents de son époque ayant pratiqué au plus haut niveau le football américain, le basket-ball et le base-ball. Il se distingue aussi en athlétisme, remportant aux Jeux Olympiques de 1912 la médaille d'or du pentathlon et du décathlon. En 1913, ses médailles lui sont retirées pour cause de professionnalisme et est radié à vie. Il arrête sa carrière sportive à 41 ans puis entame une carrière au cinéma. Il meurt en 1953 dans un relatif dénuement d’un cancer. En 1982, 29 ans après sa mort, ses médailles sont restituées par le CIO à titre posthume.

His Indian name was Wa-Tho-Huck, \\\"Shining Path.\\\" He is considered one of the most versatile athletes of his time, having played American football, basketball, and baseball at the highest levels. He also distinguished himself in athletics, winning the gold medal in the pentathlon and decathlon at the 1912 Olympic Games. In 1913, his medals were stripped from him for professionalism and he was banned for life. He ended his athletic career at the age of 41 and then began a career in film. He died in 1953 in relative poverty from cancer. In 1982, 29 years after his death, his medals were returned posthumously by the IOC.
