Ronald Wilson Reagan(1911-2004) est le 40e président des États-Unis d’Amérique de 1981 à 1989. Après une carrière d’acteur de cinéma puis de télévision entre 1937 et 1965, Ronald Reagan se tourne vers la politique. En 1967, il devient le 33e gouverneur de Californie, poste qu’il occupe jusqu’en 1975. En 1976, il entre en compétition avec Gerald Ford, le président sortant pour l’investiture républicaine. Il échoue de peu mais Gerald Ford ne sera pas élu. En 1980, faisant figure de grand favori, il remporte facilement l’investiture républicaine. Pour l’élection de 1980, il prend pour colistier George H.W. Bush, autre candidat à l’investiture et est largement élu face au président démocrate sortant Jimmy Carter. Élu sur fond de crise des otages avec l’Iran, Reagan s’engage dans un bras de fer diplomatique et militaire avec le bloc soviétique, prônant le “Retour de l’Amérique”. Sur le plan économique, il favorise le libéralisme et le laissez-faire, cherchant à stimuler l’économie par de larges réductions d’impôts, tant en coupant dans les dépenses sociales et d’éducation. Réélu en 1984, son second mandat est marqué par une certaine détente suite à l’effondrement économique de l’URSS et la politique d’apaisement de Mikhaïl Gorbatchev. Il se retire en 1989. Atteint depuis 1994 de la maladie d’Alzheimer, il succombe d’une pneumonie en 2004.

Bush, another candidate for the nomination, was widely elected against the incumbent Democratic President Jimmy Carter.. Elected against the backdrop of the Iranian hostage crisis, Reagan engaged in a diplomatic and military standoff with the Soviet bloc, advocating the “Return of America”. Economically, he favors liberalism and laissez-faire, seeking to stimulate the economy through broad tax cuts, as well as cutting social and education spending.. Re-elected in 1984, his second term was marked by a certain relaxation following the economic collapse of the USSR and the appeasement policy of Mikhail Gorbachev.. He retired in 1989. Suffering from Alzheimer's disease since 1994, he died of pneumonia in 2004..
