Commentary

Ce type fut frappé entre 1908 et 1929 d’après un modèle réalisé par le sculpteur Bela Lyons Pratt , élève de Saint-Gaudens.
A l’époque, cette frappe incuse fut peu appréciée car soupçonnée de pouvoir véhiculer des microbes et germes divers. De ce fait, peu d’exemplaires de qualité exceptionnelle ont été conservés. L’oeuvre de Pratt fut ultérieurement reconnue comme une renaissance de la frappe monétaire du XXe siècle.
Seuls deux ateliers ont frappé ce type : Philadelphie, l’atelier directeur (sans lettre d’atelier) et Denver (lettte D).
This type was struck between 1908 and 1929 after a model created by the sculptor Bela Lyons Pratt, a student of Saint-Gaudens. At the time, this incuse strike was not very popular because it was suspected of being able to carry microbes and various germs. As a result, few examples of exceptional quality have survived. Pratt's work was later recognized as a renaissance of 20th-century coinage. Only two mints struck this type: Philadelphia, the master mint (without mint letter) and Denver (letter D)
