William McKinley (1843-1901) est le 25e président des États-Unis d’Amérique. Originaire de l’Ohio, il combat dans les rangs de l’Union durant la Guerre Civile. Il rencontre alors Rutherford B. Hayes qui devient son mentor . En 1892, il est élu gouverneur républicain de l’Ohio. Grand favori pour les éléctions présidentielles de 1896, il remporte haut la main les primaires républicaines puis bat le candidat démocrate William J. Bryan. Après la crise de 1893, le mandat de McKinley fut marqué par une grande prospérité favorisée par l’abandon du bimétallisme et par un fort protectionnisme. En 1898, la Guerre Hispano-Américaine fut rapide et décisive. Les États-Unis gegnèrent le contrôle des colonies espagnoles de Porto-Rico, Guam et des Philippines, Cuba devenant un protectorat de fait. La République de Hawaii est annexé en 1898. Réélu en 1900, il est assassiné le 14 septembre 1901. Son vice-président, Théodore Roosevelt lui succède.
