Commentary

Sacagawea or Sakakawea (1787-1812) was a Native American woman from the Shoshone tribe. She was the interpreter and guide for the Lewis and Clark expedition. After the failure of the Susan B. Anthony Dollar, the US Mint launched this new type. Gold in color, this coin is easily identifiable. However, the surface deteriorates fairly quickly, and once again, this coin was a failure. Note that following the dollarization of the coin in Ecuador, the Sacagawea dollar is now widely circulated in that country.
