Harry S. Truman (1884-1972) est le 33e président des États-Unis du 12 avril 1945 au 20 janvier 1953. Issu d’une famille d’agriculteur du Missouri, il s’enrôle dans la garde nationale en 1905 puis part en Europe combattre dans le contingent américain. De retour, il ouvre à Kansas City une mercerie qui fait faillite. Avec l’aide de la machine politique démocrate, il devient en 1930. En 1934, il devient sénateur. En 1944, il remplace Henry Wallace et donc se présente au côté du président Roosevelt pour le quatrième mandat. ils sont facilement élus. Le 12 avril 1945, en qualité de vice-président, il succède à Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Peu de temps après l’Allempagne nazie est défaite. l autorise les bombardements d’Hiroshima et de Nagasaki qui met un terme à la guerre contre le Japon.Son premier mandat est donc marqué par la fin de la guerre mais aussi la difficile reconversion de l’économie de guerre et le début de la Guerre Froide avec le blocus de Berlin. Il est réélu en 1948. Son second mandat est marqué par la Guerre de Corée et au niveau intérieur par le Maccarthisme. Devenu très impopulaire, il ne se représente pas en 1952 et le candidat démocrate est battu par le républicain Dwight Eisenhower qui met fin à 20 années de présidence démocrate.

On April 12, 1945, as Vice President, he succeeded Franklin Delano Roosevelt.. Shortly after Nazi Germany was defeated. He authorizes the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, which ends the war against Japan.. His first term was therefore marked by the end of the war but also the difficult reconversion of the war economy and the start of the Cold War with the Berlin blockade.. He was re-elected in 1948. His second term was marked by the Korean War and domestically by McCarthyism.. Having become very unpopular, he did not run again in 1952 and the Democratic candidate was defeated by the Republican Dwight Eisenhower, which ended 20 years of Democratic presidency..
