Commentary


Le type “Mercury” (Mercure) est l’oeuvre du sculpteur et médailliste Adolph Alexander Weinman (1870-1852) dont le monogramme AW est visible au dessus de la date. Ses travaux suivent la plupart du temps un modèle classique lyrique. Ses figures revêtent souvent l'habillement gréco-romain, mais avec une fluidité particulière qui annonce un modèle Art Déco à venir.
Le Dime “Mercury” frappé de 1916 à 1945 sera remplacé à partir de 1946 par le type Franklin Delano Roosevelt..
The “Mercury” type is the work of sculptor and medalist Adolph Alexander Weinman (1870-1852), whose monogram AW is visible above the date. His works generally follow a lyrical classical model. His figures often wear Greco-Roman clothing, but with a particular fluidity that foreshadows a future Art Deco model. The “Mercury” Dime struck from 1916 to 1945 was replaced in 1946 by the Franklin Delano Roosevelt type.
