Commentary

This type is actually a variety of the “Coronet” type called “Matron Head” whose effigy was then much criticized. As early as 1835, Christian Gobrecht tried to improve it by rejuvenating the portrait. The modified type called “Braided Hair” was struck from 1839 to 1857. This type would be the last for large diameter 1 Cent coins (large cent).
