STATEMENTS OF POPE - Gregory IX (Ugolino Anagni)

(21/03/1227-22/08/1241)

Gregory IX was born around 1145 under the name of Ugolino Anagni. He succeeded Honorius III was elected pope March 19, 1227 before being inducted two days later. He started the Sixth Crusade and excommunicated Emperor Frederick II. After a period of reconciliation, the war with the Emperor resumed in 1239. In 1231, he instituted the Inquisition in 1233 and was the author of Vox in Rama bubble describing the witches' Sabbath.
