PAPAL STATES - BOLOGNA - SAINT-PIUS V (Antonio Ghislieri)

(7/01/1566-1/05/1572)

Pius V (1504-1572) was born in Marengo. Bishop of Mondovi, he is a Dominican, he is Grand Inquisitor for the Roman states. He succeeded Pius IV and was elected on January 7, 1566 after a vacant seat from December 9, 1565 to January 7, 1566. He reformed the order of Cîteaux and continued the work of the Council of Trent, published the Roman Catechism in 1566, the Breviary in 1568 and the Missal in 1570. He excommunicated Elizabeth I (1558-1603) and supported Mary Stuart, Queen of Scotland (1542-1587). He directs the Christian League to fight against the Turks made up of the Papal States, Venice and Spain which wins the victory of Lepanto under the command of Don Juan of Austria in 1571. He creates the Congregation of the Index. He died on May 1, 1572, was declared Blessed by Clement X on April 27, 1672, then canonized by Clement XI on May 22, 1712. His feast day is May 5..
