FRENCH STATE - FRENCH INDOCHINA

(07/10/1940-08/26/1944)

From 1940, Indochina, cut off from mainland France, was under Japanese domination, which extended its occupation between 1940 and 1945. There remained 40,000 native French people out of 40 million inhabitants. General Catroux is dismissed by Vichy and replaced by Admiral Decoux. From 1941, Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh launched operations against Japanese troops, settlers and certain members of the Vietnamese community. On March 9, 1945, the Japanese attacked the French garrisons without a declaration of war. 69,000 Japanese soldiers occupy all of Indochina. Emperor Bao Dai proclaims independence on April 17.
