Historical background

SPAIN - MARCA HISPANICA - CATALONIA - BISHOPRIC OF URGEL - PETER II OF ARAGON (1347-1408)

(1347-1408)

The county of Urgel, located at the foot of the southern slopes of the Pyrenees, belonged to the empire of Charlemagne while most of Spain depended on the emirate of Cordoba which will be erected as a caliphate in 929 under Adb el- Rahman III. Around 1027/31, the Caliphate of Cordoba crumbled into many principalities called "taifas". The reconquest of Spain by the Christians, one of the decisive events of which was the battle of Las Navas de Tolosa on July 16, 1212, only took place at the instigation of Pope Innocent III. The county of Urgel was definitively attached to the crown of Aragon in 1412.
