Historical background

SPAIN - PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT

(1868-1871)

The September 1868 revolution ousted Queen Isabella II (1830-1904), daughter of Ferdinand VII. General Prim (1814-1871) seeks a king after the abdication of the queen. He offered the crown to Leopold de Hohenzollern, nephew of William I of Prussia, which provoked war with France in 1870. The Duke of Aosta, Amédée (1845-1890), was elected King of Spain on November 16, 1870 and General Prim assassinated on December 30, 1871. Amédée I (1871-1873) was forced to flee to Italy. The same year, the third Carlist war begins and it will last until 1876.
