SPAIN - COUNTY OF BARCELONA - JAMES I CALLED THE CONQUEROR

(1213-1276)

Jacques I was born on February 2, 1208 in Montpellier from the union of Pierre II, known as "the Catholic", and Marie, lady of Montpellier. King of Aragon, count of Barcelona and lord in Montpellier at the age of five (1213), following the death of his father at the battle of Muret. He became king of the kingdom of Majorca in 1229 and of Valence in 1232. He died on July 27, 1276 during a campaign against the rebellious Muslims of Valence. He is buried in the Abbey of Poblet.
