SPAIN - CATALONIA - LOUIS XIV
(1643-1652)
On December 16, 1640, the Catalans revolted against their suzerain, Philip IV of Spain (1621-1665), and called on the French to help them. Louis XIII takes the title of Count of Barcelona, the French invade Roussillon in September 1642 and take Perpignan on September 9. The uprising of Catalonia (Levatamiento de Cataluna) against the authority of Philip IV of Spain lasted twelve years. By the Treaty of the Pyrenees, Louis XIV abandoned Catalonia, but kept Roussillon with Perpignan.
