Reverse description : Zeus aétophore, les jambes parallèles, assis à gauche sur un siège sans dossier, nu jusqu'à la ceinture, tenant un aigle posé sur sa main droite et un long sceptre bouleté de la gauche ; dans le champ à gauche, un obélisque.

Monnayage au nom et au type d’Alexandre III le Grand (336-323 avant J.-C.). Semble de même coin de droit que l’exemplaire reproduit dans l’ouvrage d’O. Hoover (HGCS 3.1/ 218.

EPIRUS - AMBRACIA

(238-168 BC)

The city was situated on a promontory at the bottom of the Gulf of Ambracia on the left bank of the Arachtus, 80 stadia from the coast (14 kms). The city was colonized by the Corinthians around 660 BC. During the Peloponnesian War, the Ambraciotes were faithful allies of the Corinthians and Lacedaemonians. She fought effectively against the Acarnanians. Following the intervention of Athens in the region under the leadership of Phormion, Ambracia concludes a perpetual peace with Argos and Leucas. Ambracia sent reinforcements to Syracuse during the Athenian landing in Sicily in 415 BC. Under Pyrrhus it was the capital of the kingdom of Epirus.
