Exemplaire sur un flan ovale et irrégulier bien centré. Droit particulier. Revers de très beau style, de haut relief. Très belle patine de collection ancienne avec des reflets dorés

Commentary

Statère d’étalon corinthien. Même coin de droit que l’exemplaire reproduit dans l’ouvrage de O. Hoover (HGCS 3/ 214 p. 88). Ce type semble plus rare que ne le laissent supposer les ouvrages généraux. C’est la première fois que nous le proposons à la vente.

The city was situated on a promontory at the bottom of the Gulf of Ambracia on the left bank of the Arachtus, 80 stadia from the coast (14 kms). The city was colonized by the Corinthians around 660 BC. Under Pyrrhus, it was the capital of the kingdom of Epirus.
