Historical background

EPEIROS - KORKYRA -KORKYRA

(5th - 4th century BC)

The city of Corcyra was founded by Corinthian settlers. It was located on the island of the same name about twenty kilometers from the Epirote coast. Corcyra emancipated from its metropolis very early in the 6th century BC. The island followed the fate of its metropolis until 338 BC, when Corinth was captured by Philip II of Macedon. In the 3rd century, after having resisted Rome, the city fell into Roman hands in 229 BC and enjoyed a certain autonomy until 48 BC..
