Historical background

ENGLAND - KINGDOM OF ENGLAND - HENRY VIII

(22/04/1509-28/01/1547)

Henry VIII, second son of Henry VII, was born on June 28, 1491 in Greenwich. He acceded to the throne of England after the death of Arthur, his eldest brother, and married Catherine of Aragon, by whom he had a daughter, Marie Tudor. In 1511 he joined the Holy League and fought against France alongside Charles V. However, he spared the king of France following the interview at the Camp du Cloth d'or in 1520 before finally getting closer to François I in 1525. He repudiated Catherine of Aragon in 1533 and married Anne Boleyn; this marriage will be at the origin of the creation of the Anglican Church. Anne Boleyn was executed in 1536 after being accused of adultery. He married Jane Seymour who died in childbirth in 1537 giving birth to the future Edward VI. Anne of Cleves, his fourth wife, was repudiated the very year of her marriage. He then remarried to Catherine Howard who was executed in 1542. His last and sixth wife, Catherine Parr, survived him. He died in Westminster on January 28, 1547.
