Historical background

ENGLAND - KINGDOM OF ENGLAND - EDWARD IV

(1461-1470 and 1471-1483)

Edward IV (1442-1483) was the son of Richard, Duke of York, and descended from Edward III. In 1461, he overthrew Henry VI who had to take refuge in France. He was driven out by the same Henry VI and Warwick in 1470. This was the start of the Wars of the Roses which lasted until 1485. Warwick and the Prince of Wales were killed at the Battle of Barnett in 1471. Henry VI is assassinated. Edward IV is restored. He died suddenly in 1483. His sons Edward V and Richard of York were assassinated at the Tower of London in 1483, by their uncle Richard III (1452-1485). Richard III was killed at Bosworth in 1485 by his competitor Henry Tudor (1457-1509) who married Elizabeth (1466-1503), daughter of Edward IV, and who became king under the name of Henry VII.
